Baselice

Baselice is a small town in the province of Benevento whose origins date back to year 1000 a.c. Located in the Fortore Valley  it still  bear witness from its ancient history. The two gates leading into the old  village are still very well preserved, Porta da Piedi  (Foot Gate) in roman style and Porta da Capo (Head gate) in a gothic style and the  ancient Torre del Capitano (Tower of the Captain).  There are several building with interesting details belonging to aristocratic families. In the Paleonthological Museum of Baselice  you may admire an extraordinary collection of local fossils and minerals dating back to millions of years ago.
Pietrelcina

Pietrelcina

Pietrelcina- is the village where the monk Padre Pio was born in 1887 and where he began his spiritual voyage. More than a century later this small center in the heart of the Sannio region has become the destination for pilgrims from the whole world.  Walking through the narrow paths of the medieval center the atmosphere is fascinating. The house where Padre Pio was born is still intact, as well as the “torretta”, the small room of the monk to where you have to climb 17 steps that have been cut out in the rock. Everything has been left as it was, the bed in wrought iron, the small desk, the chairs. It’s also possible to visit the place below an elm tree where Padre Pio for the first time received the stigmas.

San Bartolomeo in Galdo

San Bartolomeo in Galdo

San Bartolomeo in Galdo -  lies on the right hand bank of the Fortore River.  It has its origin in the lumbard period.  It is the summer residence of  the bishops of Volutala Appula and the tourists have the possibilty of visiting the Martini Palace, the  Palazzo Vescovile (the Bishop’s Palace), the Chiesa Madre and the Church of the Santissima Annunziata.

San Marco dei Cavoti

San Marco -  the village is  very well known for its crunchy chocolate crisps which are exported and sought after in the whole world. The archeological area of the ancient city of Cenna can be visited, the village of San Marco was built on its ruins.  The town also has a museum which is famous for the tower clocks.

Benevento

Benevento

Benevento was founded with the name Malevento (Bad Winds)  between the 8th and 7th century B.C.,  was taken over by the the Romans who defeated Pirro,  the King of Epiro, in the area in 276 B.C.. They then altered the name into Benevento (Good Winds). The historical  center has several ancient monuments, mostly from the  Roman period, among others the famous Arch of Traiano (114-117 a.c.)
